Concordia girls take second at conference track meet

A second-place finish at the conference track and field meet isn’t too shabby of an accomplishment. That’s what the Concordia Academy girls pulled off last week.

The Beacons amassed 96 points to beat out third-place St. Croix Lutheran by 12 points and take runner-up honors at the Tri-Metro Conference meet on May 13 at Macalester College.

The battle for second was about the only thing in doubt in terms of the team standings. Visitation was the runaway conference champion with 167 points. The Blazers recorded five individual conference champions and added four runner-up performances. In the 400-meter dash, Visitation swept the top three spots.

Concordia took home three individual conference titles. Senior Miriam Nordquist established herself as the fastest female in the Tri-Metro by winning the 100-meter dash. She added a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Nordquist picked up another gold medal by teaming with senior Anna Benson, junior Danielle Peterson and sophomore Clara Paul to win the 4x100-meter relay.

Paul was also a double winner as she was also tops in the long jump. She had another trip to the medal stand after taking second place in the triple jump.

Other high finishes for the Beacons included a second-place performance in the 4x200-meter relay by Benson, Paul, Jacqueline Waedekin and Michala Walther. Senior Megan Fallert took third in the high jump.

On the boys side, Concordia Academy ended up in fifth place. Minnehaha Academy edged St. Croix Lutheran by 4 1/2 points for the team title.

Concordia’s highest finish in a single event was a second-place effort in the 4x800-meter relay by seniors Joe Vallin and David Cullen, junior Berhane Hanson and sophomore Guy Hanson.

Next up for the Beacons is the Section 4A state qualifier on May 29 and 31 at Macalester.
