Local teams triumph at elite meet

Mounds View

The Mounds View High School track and field teams had a busy night at the Hamline Elite Meet on Friday. The boys and girls squads combined for 20 entries in the meet and one of those entries brought home a gold medal.

The Mounds View girls 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Mikayla Toninato and Elizabeth Menne, senior Nicole Geist and sophomore Rachel Boyer teamed up to run the race in 49.97 seconds. That put them a half-second ahead of the runner-up team from Minnetonka.

The Mustangs entered the event with the fastest qualifying time of the nine teams and proved that wasn’t a fluke.

The Hamline Elite event is one of the more anticipated regular-season high school track and field events. Prospective competitors must submit results from previous meets this season and meet organizers select the field based on the best times, distances and heights.

Matt Baker was a two-event qualifier and he finished fourth in both of his endeavors. A junior, Baker was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.16 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.41 seconds.

Senior Olivia Fixsen competed in three events (4x200-meter relay, high jump, 100-meter hurdles), as did junior Elizabeth Menne (4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay, 200-meter dash).

Other multi-event performers from Mounds View included senior Sola Olateju, who ran in the 4x200-meter relay and competed in the triple jump. Junior Veronica Rasmussen was also a two-event qualifier. She competed in both throwing events.

The Knights’ boys team had two entries at Hamline on Friday. The 4x100-meter relay team of senior Magnus Etuko and juniors Alex Kelner, Sam Vossler and Victor James teamed up and finished fourth with a time of 43.86 seconds, 0.67 seconds behind the winning time run by a team from Wayzata.

Senior Joe Kelner also competed on Friday in the pole vault. He finished tied for 12th place. Last spring, Kelner qualified for the state meet in the pole vault.
