Boys golf: North looking for improvement from young players

The North High boys golf team has returned to links this season with many inexperienced players on its roster.

“I hope the youngsters we have work hard on their game to improve,” North head coach Jim Pearson said. “Playing against other schools will show them they have to work on their game to have success. The attitudes of our team members are great.”
Pearson continued, “We are very young. We have only two seniors on our team, and just one of them has varsity experience.”

The senior with varsity experience is captain Travis Zappa. Others with limited varsity experience are senior Jack Hinderer, juniors Logan Cramlet and Sean Wieler, and sophomore Greg Larsen. They were primarily members of the junior varsity team last season.

North players hoping to break into the starting lineup include: juniors Cole Anderson and Joe Dahlberg; sophomores Carter Mogren, Brandon Anderson, Timmy Drake, Peter Epland and Mike Pickar; and freshmen Matt Ettlinger, Dale Coggin and Noah Collins.

Assisting with the coaching chores this spring will be Nate Peasley.

As Pearson glanced at the Classic Suburban Conference teams, he predicted the title contenders will Simley, Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi and St. Thomas Academy.

The remaining North boys’ golf schedule is: April 30, 9 a.m., Classic Suburban Conference Midseason Tournament at Oak Glen Golf Course; May 7, 2:30 p.m., triangle meet with Richfield and South St. Paul at Manitou Ridge Golf Course; May 8, 2:30 p.m., triangle meet with St. Thomas and Mahtomedi at Mendakota Country Club; May 12, 1 p.m., 18-team Anoka Invitational at Purple Hawk Golf Course; May 14, 2:30 p.m., triangle meet with Simley and Henry Sibley at Manitou GC; May 16, 2:30 p.m. triangle meet with St. Thomas and Hill-Murray at Manitou Ridge GC; and the conference championship tournament at Manitou Ridge GC.

With the uncertainty of the weather this spring, some meets may have to be canceled. Rescheduled contests may be found at:
