The Mustangs had maybe the best season of the fall when they completed the regular season unbeaten and untied en route to a berth in the state tournament.

Senior goalkeeper Erika Johnson and sophomore forward Rachel Boyer were probably the most noticeable Mustangs night in and night out and they picked up some impressive awards.

Johnson was named all-east metro by the Pioneer Press, first-team all-metro by the Star Tribune and all-state by the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association. She posted a goals-against average of 0.31 and saved 96 percent of the shots she faced.

Boyer did most of her work at the other end of the field as she finished the season with 24 goals, eight of which were game-winners, and 11 assists. She joined Johnson on the Pioneer Press all-east metro team, the Star-Tribune’s all-metro first team and the coaches association all-state team.

Irondale girls soccer

Across the district at Irondale, the girls soccer team shook off a four-game losing streak to start the season and wound up above .500.

Rachael Norton, a junior forward, let the way offensively for the Knights with 22 goals and five assists despite missing a handful of games toward the end of the season with an injury. She was also a member of the Pioneer Press all-east metro team, landed on the Star Tribune’s all-metro second team and was named all-state honorable mention by the coaches association.

Senior midfielder Alex Toupal was also honored for her play by the coaches association, which named her all-state.

Irondale boys soccer

Defense was the strength of the Irondale boys soccer team so it was appropriate that a defender was given some post-season award love.

Senior Adam Ruff was named all-state honorable mention by the coaches association.

Senior Matt Hunt led a stable of impressive running backs for the Mustangs and earned a spot on the Pioneer Press all-east metro football team. He rolled up 1,033 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

One game in particular stood out. In the regular-season finale against Roseville, Hunt set a school-record with six touchdowns while rushing for 233 yards.
