The Mounds View High School volleyball team is one of four 20-match winners in Section 5AAA. The Mustangs are the No. 4 seed and open the post-season at home on Thursday.

Mounds View hosts the winner of a first-round match between fifth-seeded St. Michael-Albertville (17-11) and No. 12 Irondale. Following a 5-3 start to the season, the Mustangs lost just once in their next 15 matches. Included in that stretch was a championship at the Centennial tournament and a runner-up finish at the Alexandria tournament.

Irondale (5-21) wasn’t able to amass many victories this season but the Knights do enter the playoffs on a two-match winning streak. Irondale won twice (over Minneapolis Henry and Blue Earth) on Oct. 19 in the final two rounds of the Rochester Exchange Club Tournament.

The Knights’ other three wins this season came against St. Paul Central, St. Louis Park and Columbia Heights.

St. Anthony Village

The Huskies open the Section 5AA playoffs on Thursday with a home match. St. Anthony (10-13) is the No. 4 South seed and hosts fifth-seeded Mound Westonka (3-21-3).St. Anthony enters the post-season having won its past three matches. Prior to that stretch, the Huskies suffered through a nine-match losing streak.

The St. Anthony/Mound Westonka winner advances to the quarterfinals on Oct. 29, most likely at No. 1 South seed Maple Lake, which faces eighth-seeded Blake in the first round.

The playoffs then continue with the semifinals on Oct. 31 and the championship on Nov. 2. The final two rounds of the section tournament take place at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
